The tsunami of overwhelmingly positive feedback we received on the inaugural Frozen Plates release, meant it was only a matter of time that a second slice of FZP vinyl would set sail. In doing so, our ideal of highlighting talent from the former Eastern Bloc – and releasing their works on 10” vinyl – remains intact. This time out we’ve got 207 from Zagreb, who comes armed with two excellent compositions. With the same approach utilized for the initial Frozen Plates release, we’re giving readers a little insight into what makes the featured producer tick, as well as some discussion of the accompanying artwork.
Vedran Pušić, aka 207, is no stranger to the dubstep scene. The Croatian producer has a characteristically dark and minimalist sound, oftentimes steeped heavily in dystopian vibes. His unique style has caught the attention of several well-known labels. Among these is Macabre Unit Digital, where he released an LP entitled “Brainstorm” (MUD040). Over at South Side Dubstars UK, he released an EP featuring Feonix and Sapleo. Additional works of his have been released by Biscuit Factory, Deep Dark & Dangerous, Indigo Movement, and Duploc. He also runs his own label called United, and has forthcoming releases on Gourmetbeats and Sentry. His first-ever vinyl offering, we’re excited to say, is being released by us here at Frozen Plates; serving up these two masterpieces on vinyl gives no small amount of satisfaction.
The first track fuses the roots sound of roots reggae, along with dub in the sub-bass tradition of dubstep. The second track is a sound-system killer, complete with pulsating fat bass.
The record comes with artwork designed by Sándor Márton, the voice and MC of the mighty Dub Phase Sound Sytem. Sándor fuses the modern, in the form of Zagreb architecture, with the old, in the form of ancient Chinese characters. The upper line displays the numeral “207” as rendered in the oldest formal versions of written Chinese. The bottom line displays the label name as written in Chinese. This artwork will be printed in a run of 30, and each copy comes hand numbered.
The studio work was completed at Green King Studio in Bristol. GKS was selected for this outing, as they offer thicker vinyl, meaning higher quality and improved durability. Digital and vinyl mastering was handled at GKS, as well.
